Kingfisher Medical was founded in 2013 by a small group that has treated patients and responded to emergency scenes around the world for nearly a half century combined. The Kingfisher Medical team also has a tremendous amount of experience providing Solutions That Save Lives to both the hospital and pre-hospital markets.
Forts Studios has partnered with Kingfisher Medical in the past to provide design and photography support for various products. While this photo might not look like much, it was actually a very challenging shoot. The products shown here are called Triage Tags and if you’ve never seen them before, that’s probably a good thing.
In a disaster or mass-casualty event, first responders use tags like these to assign a priority level to patients so that the most critical are treated first. The tags are usually made in bright colors for quick identification in the daytime, but Kingfisher wanted to showcase the glow sticks that they include with their tags for easy viewing in the dark.
We shot this photo outside at night, with some creative lighting to show the texture of the blacktop. It can be very difficult to shoot glowing objects at night, so to achieve these images we shot multiple photos at various exposure levels, then combined them together with special software to create a composite image. The result is much closer to what the human eye would see. These final photos provide a gritty and realistic picture of Kingfisher’s tags.
So while it might look like a simple shot, there is a lot going on with this project. Kingfisher had tried many times in the past to get photos like this with less than satisfactory results. But with some thought and creativity Forts Studios was able to make it happen.
